Alpha Beta vs Beta Alpha

It's funny how in the real world, Alpha is better than Beta, you have Alpha males whom rule the roost *we all know geeks run the world :-)*, and yet in the computer world, Beta is better than Alpha, alpha software builds are rubbish compared to a beta release...I wonder if this is named intentionaly?
